The client required a more high-end boutique feel, lighting solutions needed to be people-friendly; super modern yet comfortable.
Located in the Garhoud area of Dubai, this new private 100-bed hospital owned and operated by the UAE’s Prime Healthcare Group and completed in 2014 , aims to provide their patients and families with an exclusive high-end experience. While the majority of hospitals focus on functionality and pragmatism when it comes to their design, Prime Hospital wanted the patient to be the central focus of the experience. Therefore, there was a strong emphasis on creating a pleasing and tranquil atmosphere for customers.
Our knowledge about how lighting affects the body and healing process is increasing daily. Together with an upmarket design to the standards of the American Institute of Architects, Acoulite worked together with well-respected interior designer, DWP (http://www.dwp.com), in the development, design and implementation of the lighting throughout the project.
Since, the client required a more high-end boutique feel, lighting solutions needed to be people-friendly; super modern yet comfortable. Central to this were communal and circulation spaces that engendered hospitality; giving the hospital the feeling of a hotel. Various luminaires and lit forms were used to the enhance the patient and customer’s experience as one moves through the numerous floors of the hospital. Medical areas were reviewed by specialist healthcare MEP Consultant, Hosmac (http://www.hosmac.com/services/design-services/), and guidance and approval of suitable medical luminaires was provided.
To give that 5-star luxe feeling of hospitality, cove lighting was particularly crucial. Used where the gypsum boundary is lower than the central ceiling, it effectively ‘pops up’. LED strip lighting is then used around the perimeter and positioned upwards, creating an indirect lit effect. This creates a soft feel and visual interest to the space. In addition, pendant lighting was used successfully in the cafeteria to add energy and vitality.
The range of products used on this project varied greatly. A top priority was the use of green solutions. A plethora of energy efficient solutions were essential from downlights, custom pendants, LED strips, IP rated ceiling lights and other special medical-rated luminaires. All installation was completed to the standards of the international healthcare accreditation body JCI.
