Dubai, 2024
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the world’s foremost authority on diamonds, colored stones, and pearls, has inaugurated a cutting-edge facility in Dubai. Designed by Orbit Design Studio, this facility represents a significant leap in gemological education and research in the region, underlining GIA's commitment to excellence. KPS fitted the new facility, integrating their laboratory, research, and educational facilities into a state-of-the-art 43,000-square-foot space spread over three adjoining floors. Visually, the key was to convey stability, confidence, and trust, acknowledging GIA’s rich history and cultural traditions while designing a unique facility befitting their status as an industry leader. Central to the facility's success are the lighting and acoustic solutions provided by Acoulite. Acoulite’s goal was to create an inviting and functional environment that also reflects the beauty of gemstones.

Key Features:
Diamond-Inspired Lighting: The highlight of this project is the diamond-inspired lighting feature that you can notice throughout the space, embodying GIA’s passion for gemstones. These features were carefully designed, produced, and installed by Acoulite. This intricate design, achieved through LED linear lights, creates a stunning visual effect reminiscent of a diamond cut. The complexity of this installation led Acoulite to both supply and install the lighting to ensure precision and uniformity. The diamond cut lighting extends into the corridors and ceilings of other areas within the facility, maintaining a cohesive design language that is crucial for aesthetic continuity throughout the building.
Non-Glare Lighting: Ensuring uniformity and minimising glare were essential considerations. The selected lighting solutions provided consistent illumination without causing discomfort, which is crucial for an educational and research-focused environment.
Sustainable Lighting Controls: Acoulite supplied, installed, tested, and commissioned a Philips Dynalite lighting control system. This advanced system offered energy-saving capabilities and enhanced the facility’s efficiency and sustainability.
Acoustics: The space features acoustic wall panels designed in playful diamond-like shapes predominantly present in the meeting rooms and collaboration areas. These panels not only enhance the acoustics but also contribute to the modern and stylish aesthetics of the space. The acoustic installations were crucial in areas where sound quality and privacy are paramount, ensuring a conducive environment for both study and work.
Complexity of Custom Lighting: The creation of the custom-made diamond cut lighting was the most significant challenge. This intricate design required meticulous planning and precise execution to achieve the desired effect.
Key Aspects of this Challenge:
Design Precision: Translating the diamond cut concept into functional lighting required detailed CAD modeling and simulations to ensure accurate reflection and diffusion of light.
Material Selection: Choosing materials with the right optical properties and durability was crucial for both aesthetic impact and longevity.
Manufacturing: The fixtures needed precise fabrication and rigorous quality checks to match design specifications and maintain uniformity.
Installation: Ensuring perfect alignment and integration with the building structure demanded precise measurements and careful coordination with other construction teams.
Overcoming these challenges, Acoulite supplied and installed the diamond cut lighting to ensure precision and uniformity, resulting in a stunning and cohesive design throughout the GIA facility.
Coordination and Execution: The success of the GIA facility in Dubai is a testament to the seamless coordination between all parties involved. The collaboration between Orbit Design Studio, KPS, and Acoulite ensured that the project was executed smoothly, adhering to the highest standards of quality and precision. Acoulite ensured timelines and budget were also met with CSQ, who were the Project & Cost Managers on the job, playing a crucial role in the project's success. Additionally, CSQ was instrumental in recommending Acoulite to Orbit originally, facilitating Acoulite's involvement in this project.
Outcome:
· The GIA facility now stands as a benchmark for excellence in gemological education and research.
· The innovative lighting and acoustic solutions have significantly enhanced the facility's aesthetic and functional appeal.
· The successful completion of this project underscores Acoulite’s capability to deliver cutting-edge solutions in complex and high-stakes environments.
